Southeast Communities Update Print E-mail

The Salvation Army’s Southern California social service and community outreach centers are continuing to see an increase in need during this economic downturn. Operation Feed Our Families will continue to meet this need with YOUR help.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

 September 12, 2008  Huntington Park –

Southeast Communities Corps serves the residents of Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Downey, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate, Vernon and Walnut Park.

In the past 6 months, Envoy Reyes has seen a 75% increase in families, singles and seniors coming to the Corps for aid. The Corps provides nearly 200 lunches for homeless individuals everyday and groceries to 600 - 700 families in need every month.

“We see more and more households signing up for assistance weekly and I really question myself as to if we should be taking anymore clients. But how do I tell moms with kids we’re closed.” – Envoy Reyes

One Family’s Story: Mrs. Gonzalez lost her home and moved into an apartment with her daughter and 4 grandchildren. Her daughter brings home just enough for rent and some bills but nothing else. Through the Corps they now receive monthly grocery assistance.

Ms. Gonzalez says she is grateful her grandkids will have something to eat and she is relieved to be able to put food on their table.
