The Salvation Army’s Southern California social service and community outreach centers are continuing to see an increase in need during this economic downturn. Operation Feed Our Families will continue to meet this need with YOUR help.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

 September 4, 2008  Long Beach –

The City of Long Beach is a destination of choice for tourists.  Long Beach is also ranked 6th in the nation in poverty with more than a quarter of its population living at or below the federal poverty guidelines.

More and more of these "working poor" families are turning to The Salvation Army's Long Beach Citadel.  In August alone more than 93 new cases were opened (as compared to 31 new cases in August of 2007);  570 bags of groceries were provided, 400 bus tokens were distributed, and 18 vouchers for school clothing were issued (as compared to 1 voucher for clothing in August 2007). In total, 263 families (524 persons) came to The Salvation Army for assistance in August 2008.

The Long Beach Community is rallying with local food drives in the works and some donations coming in but more help is needed.

A family of three, dad is a school teacher and mom stays at home with the little one. They never thought they would be coming to The Salvation Army for food assistance. Yet they are – due to rising housing/fuel costs, and some unexpected medical bills this family is not able to make ends meet.
