 The Salvation Army’s Southern California social service and community outreach centers are continuing to see an increase in need during this economic downturn. Operation Feed Our Families will continue to meet this need with YOUR help. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT August 22, 2008 South Los Angeles –
The South Los Angeles Youth & Community Center serves as a bright spot in a troubled community. The Center provides a safe and nurturing environment for children and support for working parents stretched thin by the demands of family, work and limited incomes.
Andy Carino, caseworker in the center’s Family Services office, has seen a marked increase in families seeking assistance. She says many of these new clients are single parents who have recently been laid off.
The increase in requests for service is dramatic; 49% in May; with additional increases in June & July.
Ms. Carino also notes a decrease in federal FEMA funding for the food pantry has left their shelves precariously low. The pantry expects to run out of food in 2 more weeks. “People are asking for utilities assistance: gas & electric as well as rent assistance. However, food remains our most immediate need.”
The South Los Angeles Youth & Community Center Family Services Office needs $14,000 to remain stocked through December.

We Are Making A Difference! With your help thousands of families are getting assistance.
Operation Feed Our Families has raised over $200,000. These funds will provide food and basic needs assistance for 2,000 families in Southern California.
Requests for Service Continue to Grow Help us meet this additional need and reach our goal of serving an additional 40,000 families in 2008. A donation of $100 can feed a family of four for a week. It can also mean the difference between having to choose to pay an electric bill, putting gas in the car for work, or putting food on the table. 1-800-SAL-ARMY Operation Feed Our Families is a special campaign of The Salvation Army which supports community programs of The Salvation Army providing basic needs services (food, utility, rent assistance, case management) to struggling families in and around Los Angeles. |
