Tough economic times have increased the demand on The Salvation Army's food pantries, prompting the charitable organization to launch a campaign Friday to replenish depleted stocks.

While requests for food are up as much as 50 percent in some communities, two-thirds of The Salvation Army's food pantries are at half of their capacity or below, according to a statement.

In response, the organization launched Operation Feed Our Families to raise funds to meet the demand for food.

"We have to show that all of Los Angeles cares about other Angelenos that are hungry and in need," said former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, honorary chairman of the campaign.

Riordan said he was proud of the charitable spirit of Los Angeles residents, citing the way they helped one another in the wake of the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

"Even though they were the victims, they were also the people who helped others," he said.

With the housing crisis wracking Southern California, the average price of gas in Los Angeles County at $4.58 and the cost of food increasing, even many in the middle-class are struggling, according to The Salvation Army.

The economic downturn has also made it tougher on those who regularly give to the charity.

Families in financial trouble can find themselves having to choose between spending limited resources on food, gas and housing, said Steven Bradley, divisional secretary for program of The Salvation Army.

"We're trying to relieve at least one part of that terrible choice they have to make," he said.

A donation of $100 can help feed a family of four for a week, according to estimates from The Salvation Army.
