Runners Come Out in Force to Support Camp Gilmore and Camp Mt. Crags Print E-mail

ImageOn a perfect Saturday in June, amidst the pastoral setting of Malibu Canyon, hardy runners came out in force to participate in The Salvation Army’s third annual 10k/5k run to raise funds for two special summer camps. Besides testing their personal endurance, the participants were able to give a helping hand to a variety of summer programs offered at The Salvation Army’s Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore.

273 individual runners paid a $30 entrance fee and, along with corporate sponsors like Chevron El Segundo and the City of Calabasas, brought in more than $16,000, with an additional $8,000 in pledges still pending. These funds will soon be put to good use at Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore as children from low-income, inner-city families will get to spend a week in the mountains enjoying a respite from the harsher realities of urban life in Los Angeles.

The money raised by this event will help defray the cost of the camp and allow some of the more than 2,000 boys and girls from 7 to 18, many of them “at-risk” youth, to have the opportunity to attend a week long camp. ImageFor many, it will be a first-time experience with the joys of hiking, rock climbing, and nature study. Each camper will find themselves in a safe and protected environment, and with a staff-to-camper ratio of 7 to 20, it is little wonder that Camp Mt. Crags and Camp Gilmore have been certified by the American Camping Association.

On behalf of all the children that will have a summer camp experience where they will learn life skills and forge lasting friendships and memories, The Salvation Army says thank you to all the runners and walkers alike.
