Southern California Division Celebrates 120th Year in Los Angeles Print E-mail
The Salvation Army Southern California Division celebrated its 120th Anniversary in Los Angeles during National Salvation Army Week.  The Salvation Army’s presence in Los Angeles dates back to May 8, 1887 when the first open-air street meeting took place at the corner of Temple and Broadway. To this day, a plaque remains embedded in the sidewalk commemorating this historic event. The Southern California Division recently hosted an hour-long celebration at the original site. The noontime, May 16th, event drew celebrities and dignitaries including: Los Angeles Councilwoman Jan Perry; Suzanne Manriquez, representing Gloria Molina, 1st Supervisorial District; Tori Osborn; Sr. Advisor to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa;
Lindsay Clubine of NBC4’s “Deal or No Deal”; Victor Williams of CBS’s “King of Queens”; Malik Yoba, from the soon to be released movie “Rockaway”; and Author/Comedian Paul Ryan, who served as the events emcee.

Lt. Colonel Paul Bollwahn gave a very eloquent speech, prior to being presented proclamations from the above mentioned dignitaries. Music was provided by The Salvation Army Brass Band, and Capt. Martin Ross entertained the audience with a few songs on his steel drum.
