The death toll from the strongest earthquake to hit China in more than three decadeshas now surpassed 12,000 and authorities expect the number to go even higher. Thousands of people remain missing and hundreds of thousands of people have been injured. Due to the damage to roads and rail lines, Salvation Army disaster relief teams dispatched to the Sichuan Province will not arrive until Thursday May 15. The Salvation Army in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is responding to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis, which has killed more than 22,000 people. Communications to Myanmar have been severly affected but news has been received that local Salvationists are helping victims in the Yangon area.
